Don't Hang Around!
So as I went for a stroll with my dog today, I saw a sign in the little park by my house. It's a little grassy park/field with a path and a gazebo. On the gazebo, there was a very official sign that prohibited a number of things, but the first on the list was loitering. What is the world coming to if you aren't allowed to loiter in a park?? That's what parks are for. To spend time in. To "loiter" in, if you will.

Loonie
Ever get in a mood to exercise and you know that you'll go for a really long swim or a really long run (or whatever you do) just because you really feel like it? Well. That was me this morning. I began my swim in the rain and it was going really well and I was energized and enjoying myself. After I swam across the lake and back once, something stopped me. An animal was swimming near to me in the water. A loon. A large loon that was like 3 times the size of a duck with a really long and pointy beak. It wasn't right next to me, but it was really close. There were a few reasons that the loon made me uneasy. First of all, I don't know what kind of a temperament loons have. What if it felt threatened by my splashing and got hostile? Also, they disappear and swim under the water for so long it could pop up right in front of me, or under me, even! Therefore, I swam as fast as I could back to the dock and waited for the loon to paddle away. It didn't. Rather, it loitered in the middle of the lake in the exact spot that I was going to swim across. I did some sit-ups on my dock in spite of the loon, and then went inside.
Tomorrow: I'm going on a loon hunt. Just kidding, I wouldn't actually hurt it. It must be illegal to do stuff like that. I wonder what would happen if the authorities found out that someone killed a loon on purpose. The fine couldn't be that much...

Strong Enough For A Lady
You Are 72% Lady |
Overall, you are a refined lady with excellent manners. But you also know when to relax and not get too serious about etiquette |
Well now, Megs...we're the exact same. But you are more of a man ;). I've never told you this, but I always feel so safe when I'm with you-like you could protect me if anything happened, you know :P?

You Are My Sunshine
Yes, I am about to talk about the weather. This was a lovely moment in my Sunday afternoon. Josh and I decided to go swimming today. It was cloudy and cold and wavy. As we got in the water, the clouds started to disappear and the sun finally came out. So I just floated there and watched the clouds blow by. Cloud watching is rather peaceful.
Oh Man :P
| You Are 32% Gentleman |
You tend to think that etiquette is crap, and you pretty much act however you please. And while this does please you, it pretty much offends everyone else. |

Film
I don't have a favourite movie. When I was growing up it was all about Cinderella and then Grease. Now, it's just movies I like. Same with songs and bands. Actually, I really can't see myself getting sick of Hips Don't Lie by Shakira or Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper. So, even though I don't solidly favour a movie, there are some that I wholeheartedly didn't like :).
Movies that weren't near as good as I expected:
1. A Street Car Named Desire
2. Napoleon Dynamite
3. The Lakehouse
I realize that some people probably love these movies, but a dangerous mix of previews and friends raving about movies sometimes hypes certain movies up so much in my mind that they can't measure up to how good I think they'll be. Another explanation to why I didn't think that these movies were good could also be just because I didn't like them regardless of external influence.
Ah well, you win some you lose some...the grass is always greener on the other side...the early bird gets the worm...a penny gained is a penny earned...pain is beauty...ok, that's enough ;).

Grooving in the Garden
So I'm totally hooked on So You Think You Can Dance this season. In my opinion, romantic and wistful contemporary chorography far outweighs even the best hip hop or salsa routine. 2 of the contemporary dances I've seen this season have been so beautiful, it's like watching moving art. I'm serious. Swoon*. I still haven't picked my favourite dancer yet. Watch it, love it. :)
My garden is doing fairly well this year. Well, make that the things that are growing are doing well. A lot of the more exotic plants (like the zucchini, watermelon, tomatoes, and the list goes on) haven't sprouted at all...ok, all I really have are beans, peas, flowers, and like one carrot. Maybe I should have talked to them more when they were babies ;). I need to see about getting some magical fairies to come and live in my garden. Perhaps they could positively influence the overall crop growth (the OCG).

| Your Personality Profile |
You are dreamy, peaceful, and young at heart. Optimistic and caring, you tend to see the best in people. You tend to be always smiling - and making others smile. You are shy and intelligent... and a very hard worker. You're also funny, but many people don't see your funny side. Your subtle dry humor leaves your close friends in stitches. |

Day Off!
I've started to develop a real interest in world events. That means reading the paper and watching the news. I have to say, it's nice to be in touch with the rest of the world. The next step in my personal growth will be perhaps blogging about my opinions on global happenings. We'll see about that later.
Also, I can sucessfully do a cartwheel off our floating dock and into the lake. So can Josh.
Finally, Morgan's hips don't actually lie. However, what does it mean if they do?? Hmmm...

Mission Megha
Do you ever have those moments during a social gathering or an event when you keep telling yourself that you are having fun and things aren't boring or stupid, but then when it's all over you know that it truly was a waste of your life and you were being waaay too optimistic? Well, Saturday night was the exact opposite of what I just described. So fun!
Morgan and I decided that we knew what was best for our study-happy Megha so we kidnapped her last night. On the way to Megha's, we were blasting the radio and this car full of guys pulled up beside us. Cute guys. Who were our age. Morgan was like, "Jessie, those guys are trying to get our attention, don't look at them!" So of course I looked out the window at them and they were all staring at us and saying things that I couldn't make out. I just smiled sweetly and waved at them. Then one pulled out his cell phone and mouthed, "What's your number??" while everyone else was talking and laughing. There was only one girl in the car who gave me a sympathetic look from the back seat. Of course I just shook my head at him, resisting the temptation to give him someone else's number (like Megha's), and after more asking on his part, we drove away. I have to say it was a fun moment. Now as a girl, you could take this two ways. First you could be enraged that a guy would think of you just as a sex symbol and think he is a jerk because he doesn't know you. Or you could take it as a compliment and an ego boost. I happen to be closer to the latter then the former, but I can see both sides. I suppose the whole thing was silly, but I have to say, I enjoyed it.
We got to Megha's and she was home alone. So we gave her a few minutes to get dressed and we were off. Morgan and I were sure to take two of Megha's new clothing items with us to add to our kidnapper costumes. We dangled these items periodically out the windows of the car during the night. I took some measures to make sure that Megha had something to wear on her head as well. Of course no kidnapping would be complete without a blindfold, so we blindfolded her and piled into Morgan's car. Then we decided where we would go. First stop: Sobeys to buy some toilet paper and a disposable camera to properly document our nite. Then we were off downtown for a bit. Megha loved wearing the blindfold as we led her through the streets. She stubbed her toes a couple times and almost fell down a flight of stairs. She is going to wander around town blindfolded more often just for kicks. We moseyed through a bachelor party and a table full of guys scared poor blindfolded Megha half to death when they all started hooting and hollering at her and asking us questions about the "shy girl". Our drinks ended up being on the house. On our way home, we raced this car full of girls who had it in for us the second they drove up to us. I'm not really sure why. We zoomed by them and I didn't hear the things they were yelling at us, but I don't think that they weren't nice words. Angry words, even :). Then we broke out the butter beetlejuice at Megha's and watched Bride and Prejudice. It took me a little while to grasp the fact that the movie is supposed to be like Pride and Prejudice (I thought they just wanted to use the name...).
In conclusion:
Me and Morgan are the best friends a girl could have.
Morgan, Megha, and I are hot mamas.
Our hips don't lie. Well, Morgan's do sometimes.

3 Hot Chocolates and Some Caulking
1. Alysa's mom (swim kid's mom)
2. Laura's mom (co-worker's mom)
3. Shaun and Katie
Each of these guys brought me hot chocolate at the beach today. I drank 3 large hot chocolates over one lifeguarding shift in the pouring rain. The first one I drank while I was chest-deep in the water teaching swimming lessons this morning. Pretty sweet.
While me and Laura were passing time under our umbrella today, we decided that we would win the "at-work song of the day" on C100. We both put the number on speed dial and waited by the portable radio. The second that Kelly Clarkson started singing, I whipped out my cell and...yes, we won. What did we win? Well, besides the fame of hearing that the prize went to "Jessie from Sackville", I am now the proud owner of Floral Design or something with a name like that. It is caulking that you can use to fix up pools, your driveway, your drains, and so on. It goes on wet and dries to rubber. My wildest dream came true before my very eyes :P. What happened to give-aways like CDs or tickets!? No one knows.
I am finally dry.
My plans for 2nite: quality time with my television under a warm blanket.
I got the idea for my favourite people of the week from someone else's blog. The names are different though ;).

Dear Diary
I've survived my first week as a beach captain. I think that the power may be getting to me, because I really like it ;). Another thing I love is the ring tone on our beach phone. It's kinda tropical. I always let it ring for awhile just so I can enjoy it. The only comfort I have after the moments in which I have said ditzy things to my supervisors this year is the fact that they probably forget what I say rather quickly because they have so many beaches to take care of.
A couple memorable quotes from the first week:
"Lifeguard, are there leeches in this lake? How about fish? Eels?? Is this an Indian burial ground??"- an 8ish year old boy
"Lifeguard, is this water safe to swim in? Can you write a note to my mom and tell her that it is? No really, I'm serious. She never believes anything I say." - the 8 year old's friend
"Dad! I'm bringing something home to give to mom!" a 6 year old yells holding a bucket with a fish in it, "I'm not telling you what it is!"
The regular kids at the beach are so great! They always help us bring our supplies down to the beach and they set up the beach for me. It's an excellent arrangement, really :). My mom told me my tan looks orange today...just call me a walking, talking pumpkin. Maybe I like being orange. So yes things are fairly positive at work. However, I am actually getting a little tired of working full-time. Perhaps a vacation is in order ;). Even though I am at a beach everyday, I want to get out to a real beach sometime soon. Salt water does good things to curly hair.
